For years, Australia’s supply of essential chemicals has been exposed to significant risk. The industry has been dominated by a monopoly, leaving the nation reliant on a single domestic chlorine producer and the importation of over three billion litres of caustic soda every year.
This dependency creates a critical vulnerability for the sectors that underpin our daily lives, including:
  • Public Health: Clean drinking water and wastewater treatment.
  • Economic Stability: The resource, food processing, and manufacturing industries.
  • National Security: A stable supply of chemicals for healthcare and industrial resilience.
Recognising this critical issue, key industries and bodies have been crying out for another major player to enter the market and enhance the resilience of our national supply chain.

Project Halogen is Grenof’s direct response to this national challenge. Located in the industrial hub of Gladstone, Queensland, our facility will establish a second, independent domestic source of chlorine gas and produce essential chemicals including Caustic Soda, Sodium Hypochlorite, and Hydrochloric acid locally.

1. Strengthening National Security & Resilience by breaking the domestic monopoly and reducing our reliance on imports, Project Halogen ensures a stable, secure, and reliable Australian supply of chemicals vital for public health and key industries.

2. Driving Economic Prosperity & Community Growth with backing from government funding, this project represents a major investment in the Gladstone region. It will:

  • Create over 100 local jobs, apprenticeships, and a graduate program.
  • Offer long-standing opportunities for the region through a dedicated indigenous engagement program.
  • Strengthen the local economy by integrating into Gladstone's vibrant industrial ecosystem.

3. Leading with Advanced, Sustainable Technology as an Australian-owned company committed to a sustainable future, our Gladstone facility will be a leader in clean chemical technology.
